No get well card
because they can’t see your pain
Trapped inside
Thoughts unwelcome
No get well card
because “you’re not really ill.”
Should have rested more
Gone on that holiday
Got other stuff on
No get well card
your truth is a little close to theirs
No get well card
because we didn’t take the time
to know the difference in you
The journey started with a psalm – it carried me
“The lord is my shepherd even though I walk through darkness I will not be afraid for you are with me your rod and staff guiding me to the light.”
Paraphrased and said over and over again at 4am, in the darkest night
I’m sending you a get well card in the bars of this song
Get better
You are loved
You are needed
You are brave
What you have in front of you is real, is all you need
Time, kindness to yourself, keep going
You’re inspirational
No get well card
In a land that isn’t stable
I’m looking in the mirror
I no longer see a monster that some are scared to call vicarious trauma
I see me for the first time for a long time.
Getting out a suitcase but it’s not for me. It’s for my unwelcome guest, the crow upon my shoulder. He’s become somewhat of a pest, time he flew the nest.

Dedicated to all those who support those who’ve experienced trauma. Criminal justice professionals, social workers, teachers, health care professionals, clergy, anyone whose job it is to care and safeguard. You’re amazing. If you’re not in a good place, because the incredible work you do has taken its toll then I say don’t let anyone tell you you’re weak. You’re the strongest most inspirational people of all.
There is light at the end of the tunnel there is hope and help and love. May you have ease of being and my prayers are with you.
