Last year my band Joker’s Flight, eschewed a traditional record launch show for our first EP, and instead performed a show in support of War Child. We used the tenuous fact we had some new music out to leverage our very small platform to raise awareness and money for War Child.
Rather than buying our record we encouraged people to scan QR codes and donate directly to War Child. We were inspired to do this because as a family band, we were so grateful that we are free from the fear of bombs and bloodshed to be able to spend time together making music. We were so grateful that we could bring our family and friends together in a safe space to celebrate life and love.
My lyrics are often inspired by the events around me and there are a couple of songs on the first record that I guess you could call protest or protest adjacent songs, (there are definitely some protest songs on the new record), so again it felt like it was something we could do and had synergy with the art we want to create.
So, I was heartened to see that War Child has just announced something many supporters hoped would happen – a sequel to the iconic first Help album, featuring a new generation of artists, and also including some from the 90s, Damon Albarn, Beth GIbbons and Jarvis Cocker are involved. It will no doubt raise much needed funds and awareness.
Check out the trailer and do consider supporting the incredibly vital work of War Child.
