This is my interpretation of Jon Klassen’s beautiful illustration for the front cover of Pax, a novel by Sara Pennypacker.
I’ve worked intentionally to make this lighter than previous efforts, literally and in the sense that it seems more hopeful. Pax looks thoughtfully at the sunrise, and I wonder whether he’s about to launch into a run down into the valley below.
It hadn’t occurred to me that my drawings could reflect my moods or view of the world until my wife mentioned it to me last night. If that is the case it hasn’t been a conscious thing but this picture does make me feel happy.
Here is the original drawing by Klassen as a comparison. I’m looking forward to reading the book.
