Our new video is out for Doubting Thomas, one of my favourite tracks from our latest record, Time is an Ocean.
I’ve always felt a little hesitant to explain exactly what my lyrics are about. To me, a song can mean something different every time you hear it—even for the person who wrote it.
When people ask what a specific line means, I’m always flattered. It’s the ultimate compliment because it means you’re really listening. But there’s a delicate balance to strike: I never want to over-explain and risk stripping away the mystery. I’d much rather let the words speak for themselves and let you find your own story within them.
However, for this song, I’ve decided to give you one small peak behind the curtain.
The Recurring Dream
There is a line in the track: “I have this recurring dream, where I’m late for the plane again.”
This one is actually very literal. For years now, I’ve had this same dream. Sometimes the setting shifts—it might be a train station or a bus depot—but the ending is always the same: I’m running late, the departure is delayed, and I just can’t seem to get home.
It’s a persistent, restless feeling that has followed me for a long time, and it finally found its way into the music.
To the “dream experts” out there: I’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments. What do you make of the missed connection?
Why can’t we be more like
Mary in the garden
and less like Thomas,
doubting with no reason
It’s easy to believe in
what’s laid out before you
than in the things that are not spelled out –
Clearly crisp and obvious
And he waited at the gates
and on the Spanish cobble
rambling through the quarter
trading shadows in for sorrow
And he wondered if he could be
both master and apprentice –
The masterful apprentice
of the hidden senses
and should lands have fences
if they can’t be mended
And so he stood there often
at the cracks and on the precipice
fending off the dogs who were lying and mendacious
and he will stand there proudly
flying flags audacious
Why can’t we be more like
Mary in the garden
and less like Thomas
doubting with no reason
And I have this recurring dream
where I’m late for the plane again
And I’m always lost and lonely
Lonely in the dreamscape
And now im gently drifted
To the tune we lifted
And Gaudi had a vision
of a star upon a tower
and he knew he could not do it
in the blinking of an hour
but his faith was a map of tiny lights to guide us
and his was an example
of how faith can restore us
And it really is a story of how God is continuous
and we are all disciples
always moving forwards
And why can’t we be more like
Mary in the garden
and less like Thomas
doubting with good reason
Why can’t we be more like
Mary in the garden
and less like Thomas
doubting for good reason
And why can’t we be more like
Mary in the garden
and less like Thomas
doubting for good reason
And why can’t we be moree
Mary in the garden
and less like Thomas
doubting for good reason
And why can’t we be more like
Mary in the garden
and less like Thomas
doubting for good reason
I hope you enjoy our song, please let me know your favourite parts in the comments.
Also as the song is pretty long, it got me thinking of my favourite long tracks.
My top one is probably Hey Jude, what’s yours?
