He says the working man’s morning prayer

“Am I happy

What is the meaning of my labor

Am I a good Dad

A good partner”

Crouched in the damp doorway

Cigarette cradled with such perfect gentleness, like he’s holding onto his final hope

He says his prayers again

“Am I happy

What is the meaning of my labor

Am I a good Dad

A good partner”

The morning breaks, another day without sunshine

Gets into the car, cracked lips too tough for Chapstick

Another day, another yard, working hard, he prays

For sunshine and his little baby

“be alright, just be alright.”
